There are nearly endless backyard badminton sets to choose from, all with unique features, shapes, and materials. The good news is that most of them follow the same order when it comes to setup. And as long as you know a few basic steps, you can have your net ready in 30 minutes or less.

Keep reading to learn a step-by-step guide on how to set up a badminton net, from court size to assembling the base and more.

How to set up a badminton net: step-by-step

Here’s how to set up a badminton net in three easy steps:_

1. Choose the location and mark the boundaries

The dimensions of every badminton net setup can be slightly different. However, the official dimensions of a badminton court are 20 feet (6.1 m) x 44 feet (13.4 m). So, you’ll want to find an open area around that size if possible.

From there, you can mark the boundaries of your court using chalk, tape, or anything else that works with the surface you’re playing on. Of course, if you’re just planning on casual backyard badminton, you can skip this step – but it’s always an option if you want to play the official way.

2. Install the base

Many portable badminton nets have an independent base that attaches to the bottom center of the net (such as this net from FBSPORT). These are typically smaller than a standard-sized net, but are extremely easy to assemble. To set up this kind of net, all you need to do is:

  • Place a pole on each side of the base.
  • Extend each pole fully out.

Other backyard badminton sets have multiple poles that stick together, and they may or may not connect to pegs driven into the ground. To assemble these, simply glue each section of the post together so they stand upright at full height.

Note: If your net setup is inserted directly into the ground, attach the net after you’ve placed the first post. Then, you can use the loose end of the net as a guide to figure out where you want to place the other posts.

3. Attach the net to the poles

Once you’ve assembled your posts, you’re ready to start assembling the net.

Some nets have pockets that slip over the top of the poles, while others have simple loops or eye bolts that attach to the top and bottom of the net.

This step can vary depending on the type of net you have, so be sure to check your set’s instructions for more specific instructions. In the meantime, this video tutorial from Badminton Warehouse can also help you understand how it all fits together:

And that’s it, you now understand how to build a backyard badminton set in a few easy steps. While not every badminton net will be exactly the same, the steps will generally be similar no matter which net you choose. In short, just:

  • Start by choosing and marking your court area.
  • Assemble your free-standing net base (or insert your posts into the ground if necessary).
  • Extend the posts outward/snap on any extra pieces.
  • Attach the mesh to the posts. Then, grab some rackets, a partner, and a birdie, and you’re ready to jump into the match!
